Gra Lygia

Gra Lygia

Gra Lygia is a seaside village around 5km west of Ierapetra. Its beach begins west of the mouth of the Kalamaukianos River in Stomio and extends east to the Potami settlement.

It has a beautiful sandy beach with fine pebbles in places. Several tamarisk trees on its beach provide plenty of shade to visitors passing through, while there are also basic tourist facilities.

The area's inhabitants are mainly involved in the greenhouse cultivation of early horticultural crops that are exported across Europe. Early horticultural crops have been grown outdoors since 1930, while the first greenhouse cultivation of early horticultural crops in Crete began here in 1966 and has now expanded throughout the island. The use of greenhouses was initiated by the Dutchman Paul Kuijpers, whose statue is at the entrance of the village of Stomio.

The Bramiana dam, with its characteristic turquoise waters, is located at a short distance to the north, which, in addition to being the main water provider for the greenhouses, is also an important wetland. You can drive around the dam.
