Agia Fotia

Agia Fotia

Agia Fotia is a coastal settlement 45 km southeast of Agios Nikolaos and 12 km east of Ierapetra, in the area of the village of Agios Ioannis. It is a small bay formed at the mouth of a river with plane trees on the south of the Thriptis mountain range. The river forms the historical border of the provinces of Ierapetra and Sitia.

The beach of Agia Fotia has many tamarisk trees, while the surrounding cobblestones that have been elaborately sculpted by the salt and the wind are impressive. The beach has fine gray pebbles and tranquil waters and is well-organized with taverns, hotels, and beach bars. The islet of Agia Fotia is opposite the beach.

Agia Fotia was named after the picturesque church of Agia Fotini, located on the river near the main road connecting Ierapetra with Makris Gialos.
