Koutsounari is a small coastal village situated 6km east of Ierapetra, in the area of the picturesque village of Agios Ioannis. “Megali Paralia” of Agios Ioannis spreads in front of the village, which is about 5km long, and is one of the longest in South Crete.
This quiet beach has the typical coarse dark sand of the Ierapetra area. There are tamarisk trees in many places, and because of the beach's long length, it never looks crowded. The beach is organized in places since there are several hotels, taverns, mini markets, and a well-organized campsite.
The sandy small bay of Psaropoula has a rocky bottom and calm waters and is located on the easternmost part of the beach. Next to it is the well-organized beach of Vothoni, known to all locals as Kakkou Beach, named after the historic hotel. Carved fish tanks from the Roman Era are preserved in the rocks east of the beach.
