Tholos lies 4 km north of the village of Kavousi in the province of Ierapetra. It is formed at the exit of a fertile valley, full of olive trees, which flows from the river that carries the waters of Thrypti. The region has moderate tourism growth making it ideal for a quiet family holiday.
Tholos has a lovely beach with sand on the west and pebbles on the east. There are several tamarisks near the beach, where you can find some shade. You will find a few rooms, hotels, and taverns, like in the picturesque Kavoussi.
The area is full of freshwater springs coming mainly from Mount Malavra in the west, and the waters get a characteristic light blue color which is said to have given its name to Tholos (from the Greek word "tholos", which means blurred).
Across from Tholos stands the impressive island of Psira. Traces of a thriving Minoan settlement have been found on the island, on the site of Tholaria. Accordingly, the entire area has scattered archaeological sites, the most important being Azoria, Vronta, and Kavousi Castle.
